Revision for painful knee prosthesis
In medicine, revision refers to the repetition or extension of a previously performed operation (revision and exchange operations).
The most common reason for a revision is the insufficient success of the previous operation or complications with the knee prosthesis.
Revision surgery on the knee (knee endoprosthetics) is necessary as a follow-up intervention if loosening of prosthesis parts, wear of the sliding plastic or infections of the knee prosthesis occur.
In the case of loosening, a distinction is made between aseptic loosening (without an infectious cause) and septic loosening, which is caused by a bacterial infection.
The revision is intended to achieve the originally intended treatment success or at least an improvement of the current condition.
