Meniscus

Meniscus injuries are one of the most common causes of knee pain, but can often be treated relatively easily.

In a conversation with Dr. med. Matthias Schmied you will learn which treatment options are possible.

The menisci are an important part of the knee joint. They are responsible for stability and act as shock absorbers. The causes for injuries and tears of the menisci are manifold. In the foreground are accidents and wear and tear.

If an injury in the area of the menisci is suspected, it is usually useful to perform an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). This examination does not cause any radiation exposure.

If an injury to the meniscus is proven, a decision must be made as to whether surgery is advisable. If there are no blockages or the symptoms are mild, a wait-and-see, non-surgical therapy can be initiated first. Otherwise, arthroscopy (minimally invasive surgery) is the treatment of choice.

Treatment is carried out with short-stay hospitalisation (in individual cases also on an outpatient basis).
